Twenty-five years after the events of September 11, 2001, questions continue to be raised about the official account of what occurred that day. This course explores those questions through selected episodes of an acclaimed documentary and guided class discussion. Participants will examine the documentary's claims, consider the evidence and arguments presented, and engage in thoughtful conversation about their merits. While history cannot be changed, revisiting significant events from multiple perspectives can deepen our understanding of one of the most consequential days in modern history.

Two leviathan women who have profoundly benefited society through their fortitude, intelligence, and creativity serve as outstanding role models for advancing women: Jean Houston and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Jean Houston—author of more than 30 books, scholar, and founder of the Human Potential Movement—has served as a consultant to leaders in more than 40 countries through the United Nations, as well as to President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. Her best-known books include The Possible Human and A Mythic Life. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman and the first Jewish woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, was a lifelong advocate for gender equality. Through her work on the Court and with the ACLU's Women's Rights Project, she helped advance women's rights and reshape American law. This course explores the lives, accomplishments, and enduring legacies of these two remarkable women.

Using The Penguin Book of the Modern American Short Story , we'll explore a diverse selection of stories written between 1970 and 2020 by Pulitzer Prize winners, New York Times bestselling authors, and lesser-known literary voices, including writers of color, Indigenous authors, and first-generation Americans. Participants will read the stories in advance and engage in lively discussions that examine each work within its historical and cultural context while exploring the recurring themes that define the American experience.
